  • I would like to share a below article about the common traits of super agers with you all. Please read it before our meeting and, reflecting on your own experiences, prepare to answer the following questions: 1. Have you engaged in any activities that enhance brain health as mentioned in the article? How have these activities impacted you personally? 2. What role does physical exercise play in your life, and have you noticed any cognitive benefits? 3. Can you relate to any of the traits or habits of super agers? How do these align with your personal or professional life? 4. How do you prioritize sleep in your routine, and what effects have you observed on your cognitive function or overall well-being? 5. Based on the article, what changes might you consider making in your lifestyle to support long-term brain health?

  • The Common Traits of Super Agers: The Dream of Long Life and the Bio Revolution (2) Professor Kim Geon-ha from Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital's neurology department explains the three lifestyle habits: "The first one is engaging in many new activities that stimulate the brain, like learning a musical instrument or a foreign language. The second habit is having significantly more physical activity compared to average older people. The third is having a strong social network through social activities such as interacting with friends and relatives or doing volunteer work. These traits help keep the brains of super agers strong, according to research." Engaging in various activities, like reading, traveling, or listening to music, as well as socializing, can lower the risk of dementia. Trying new things and having new experiences are especially good for the brain compared to doing the same things repeatedly. Professor Kim suggests that even keeping a daily journal can activate the brain's frontal lobe, which helps organize information. Staying physically active, especially with aerobic exercise, is very important for preventing dementia. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, improving nutrient supply to brain cells, and boosts the production of BDNF, a brain-protecting substance. In August this year, a study in Spain compared 64 super agers with 55 regular older adults. Super agers scored higher in cognitive tests than people in their 50s. Brain scans showed they had more gray matter, which handles thinking, and thicker cerebral cortices than regular older adults. Their IQs and education levels were similar to regular older adults. Researchers identified 11 key factors that made a difference. Super agers had high physical activity scores and low anxiety and depression levels. They managed daily tasks well and had high reading scores. They were active in middle age, had quick response times, and got enough sleep. They also had learned music and had fewer blood sugar problems. This highlights the importance of diverse experiences, physical activity, positive emotions, and now, quality sleep. Recently, the quantity and quality of sleep have been recognized as key in preventing dementia. Professor Kim explains, "Good sleep strengthens brain networks and washes away some Amyloid, the main cause of Alzheimer's, during sleep."

  • The Common Traits of Super Agers: The Dream of Long Life and the Bio Revolution (1) There are people in their eighties who think as clearly as someone in their forties. These people, known as "super agers," make up about 10% of the population. Some show signs of dementia in brain scans but still have no problems with thinking. Even if the brain is damaged, their "cognitive reserve" works like a backup battery, helping them continue to function. We looked into the brains of these aging "superheroes." It's something anyone can achieve, not just those born with. Carmen Dell is the oldest working supermodel in New York. Born on June 3, 1931, she is 92 years old and even did a photoshoot this past April. There are people in their 80s and 90s who maintain the brain function of someone 20-30 years younger. These people are called "super agers." Super agers have not only younger brains but also bodies that are much younger than those of their peers. Super agers share some special traits. It's not about spending a lot of money on drugs or treatments, nor about having good genes. It's something anyone can do in their daily life. Let's find out how to become a super ager. When comparing PET/CT scans of super agers' brains with those of regular people, the Tau and Amyloid proteins, which cause Alzheimer's, are almost absent in super agers. Their brains are much cleaner compared to those of ordinary older people or those with mild cognitive impairment. Since the 1980s, neurologists have studied dementia patients and found that those with higher education levels or professional jobs tend to get dementia less often. The risk of dementia can be more than twice as high depending on education and job level. However, around the same time, people with a lot of brain deposits that usually cause dementia showed no signs of it. This is due to some reserve ability in the brain called "cognitive reserve," which helps prevent dementia. In the 80s and 90s, this was thought to be due to education, but later studies revealed that a variety of activities can enhance cognitive reserve. These traits closely match those of super agers.
