이중섭 오페라 / Lee Jung-seob Opera - 서귀포시 가족센터

Last Friday (4 October), I had the chance to go to the 이중섭 Opera in 서귀포시 thanks to the #서귀포시가족센터 It was my first time to see an opera and I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to understand anything because the whole performance is in Korean. However, when we arrived, we received a programme which contained the synopsis of the opera so I could follow along with the key parts of the story. The lyrics were also shown on two screens on either side of the stage in Korean which meant that I could get the gist of each song, even with my limited Korean language ability. While I had heard of the artist Lee Jung-seob before, because of the Lee Jung-seob Art Street in Seogwipo, I had no idea about anything in his life. It was really interesting to watch and listen to Lee Jung-seob’s life as he left his family in present-day North Korea and followed his passion for art by leaving for Japan which lead to the blossoming love story between him and his wife Masako. Set against the backdrop of the Japanese occupation of Korea, Korean Liberation and the subsequent Korean War, the first part of the opera follows the family’s move between Japan, Northern Korea, Busan and then on to Jeju Island. After a short intermission, the opera shows the pain and longing of Lee Jung-seob as he lives in debt, his struggles to provide for his family through his art, and his loneliness and failing mental health after Masako and their children move to Japan. Throughout the opera, there were digital images of Lee Jung-seob’s paintings projected onto the large screen behind the performance that helped to show his talent, his mind and the way his environment and experiences affected his art. The actors, dancers, orchestra and arrangements of each piece were excellent and it was both informative of the life of 이중섭 and engaging. Everyone involved was extremely talented and the performance flowed together seamlessly between the music, acting and dancing. As always, the event was organised well by the 서귀포시가족센터 staff. 김보라쌤 from the 서귀포시가족센터 provided us with some refreshments and our tickets when we arrived. This meant that we could easily enter the theatre (서귀포예술의전당 대극장) and find our seats to enjoy the performance. They kept in contact prior to the event and let me know all the relevant information via text so I knew where to go and when. Overall, it was a peaceful and enjoyable night where I could experience new things with friendly people in Seogwipo~ ^^ All of this was possible thanks to the 서귀포 시가족센터 and their monthly programs for Single-Person Households.
